Tampa Microwave Manpack Offers Battery Saving Feature

TAMPA, Florida April 13, 2011 Tampa Microwave (TM), a veteran owned small business specializing in satellite communication systems, microwave modules, satellite link simulators and carrier monitoring equipment announced the completion of verification testing of a significant battery life improvement feature that manages the power required for its Manpack family of X, Ku and Ka band ultra portable satellite terminals.

In cooperation with iDirect Government Systems, Tampa Microwave has designed its terminals to implement a Transmitter Keyline feature.  A Tampa Microwave terminal using iDirect’s V2.3 modem software disables its transmitter until commanded by the iDirect e850MP modem to send a data packet. When packet transmission is complete, the Keyline returns the amplifier to standby mode to await the next transmission.  Using the Keyline extends the terminal’s battery life by a factor of at least 2x up to a maximum of 3x depending on the transmitter duty cycle.

All TM-X850MP terminals delivered to date contain the capability to implement this function. Software upgrade of the modem is all that is required to access this system capability. The modem software upgrade will take place automatically from configured hubs when the terminal is first logged into the network.

About the TM-X850MP Manpack: Intended for use with SKYNET, XTAR and WGS satellites, the MIL-SPEC TM-X850MP manpack features an extraordinary level of integration and thermal management. The architecture eliminates the need for separate microwave modules contained in a traditional transit case with forced air cooling. This high-level of integration has produced the smallest, highest data rate, militarized X-band manpack currently available.  The Ku band version of this manpack will be available for demonstrations in Q2 of this year. Ku band capability may be added to any currently fielded X-band terminal by swapping the Receiver / Transmitters, feed and antenna petals. This upgrade can be accomplished in the field in minutes without the use of any tools. The Ku-band manpack implements Tampa Microwave’s Auto-Assist pointing capability which facilitates the very simple operation by incidental operators.
